San Diego Boys
These are the lads from our first full-time band in San Diego. Bob met Les Allen (guitar and vocals); Brad Kirkbride on drums (lovely Brad), and Jeff Brown on keyboards. They were doing the country circuit, Les being able to sing everything in that genre; when Susie Salmon heard them and recruited them. I later joined as a backing vocalist (see American Dreams I and II). This arrangement fulfilled a dream for me, one I hadn’t realised I had: to sing with an incredible band in the US of A.
On a stay-over in San Bernadino, Bob and I shared a motel room with Brad, Les & our roadie (Steve?). Bob told me later that, while Brad, Les and Steve really wanted to get some ‘adult’ entertainment on the TV after the gig, they chose ‘Wayne’s World’ coz they knew I liked it (obviously so did they, but it was sweet of them).
Les leaves most vocalists in the dust: his precision and high standards were obvious even in the most mundane of situations; he and Brad had worked together apparently (correct me if I’m wrong, guys) for a good while and had a great dynamic going on. Going to their gigs before I joined was such a pleasure: you were in the hands of professionals. Bob fitted in beautifully – they gelled amazingly.
When Susie became their vocalist & I joined on backing, there was a really good thing going on, and thinking of it now brings back such lovely memories.
Hey, guys, any memories you’d like to share? I’d love to hear from you.
